ACCELERATING THE RESCUE OF AFRICAN LIVES BY LEARNING HOW CHINA’S HEALTH SYSTEM CAN PROMOTE THE HEALTH OF WOMEN AND NEWBORNS

The project aims to summarize the progress made by China in reducing maternal and infant mortality and to find applicable ways to tacklematernal and child health problems in Sub-Saharan Africa. The project evaluates the effectiveness of the health system and policy (or intervention projects), highlighting the intensity of implementation (including both qualitative and quantitative)to achieve the desired objectives. The intensity of the implementation of intervention projects is evaluated through the assessment of the relation and other key factors between system inputs and health outputsat different levels. The ultimate goal of the project is to reduce maternal and infant mortality. It focuses on input and output of the health system: (1) improving and making common and comprehensive obstetrical services accessible at health institutions, especially services targeting poverty-stricken people living at rural and remote areas; (2) establishinga financing mechanism that can remove the economic obstacles in obstetrical services. Our analysis will focus on the evidence collected at Western China, because it is recent and its socioeconomic background resembles that inSub-Saharan Africa. Research methods include second-hand data analysis, epidemiologic field investigations, health economics analysis, statistic modeling, and public policy process analysis.

The project was funded by Medical Research Council (MRC) and led by Prof. Ronsmans Carine from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The Center for Health Development in China of Peking Universityand the West China Center for Rural Health Development are the two co-work groups under the project. The Tanzania Evidence for Action (E4A) project team participates in the transformation research of this project.

Having started from April, 2015, the project will last for 3 years.
